Day Trips from Seoul
Last checked: October 2026
Some of the best sights near Seoul are an hour or two away by subway and bus: a UNESCO fortress, the border with North Korea, a tree-lined river island, and Korea's biggest theme park. All of them work as a day trip with a T-money card.
- History
- Suwon Hwaseong
- North Korea border
- DMZ from Imjingak
- Nature
- Nami Island
- Theme park
- Everland
The Seoul Climate Card doesn't work on these trips. It covers Seoul only, not Gyeonggi buses or Korail trains. Use a T-money card, and tap off every time to keep the transfer discount.

Suwon Hwaseong Fortress
An 18th-century walled fortress on the UNESCO World Heritage list, about an hour south of Seoul. Walking the walls is the main event.
- The walls are free and always open, even after dark.
- Hwaseong Haenggung (the king's temporary palace): 2,000 won, 09:00–18:00 daily. In 2026 it also opens at night on Fridays to Sundays until November 1 (18:00–21:30). Free on the last Wednesday of the month.
- Hwaseong Trolley, a tram that runs along the walls: 6,000 won.

Getting there
Line 1 Suwon Exit9
- Take Line 1 from Seoul Station to Suwon Station. Leave by Exit 9 and catch bus 2-2, 36, 39, or 400 (among others) from the Maesan Market stop to Paldalmun.
- Direct buses from Seoul: 3000 from Gangnam Station Exit 7, or 1007 from Jamsil Station Exit 6 (to the Hwaseong Haenggung stop).
The DMZ
Panmunjom (JSA) is closed to foreign visitors. According to the Ministry of Unification, tours for foreigners are not running in 2026, and the DMZ Peace Trail is for Korean nationals only. Some tour companies still advertise JSA tours. Don't book one.
What you can visit is the Paju DMZ Peace Tour: the Third Infiltration Tunnel, dug by North Korea under the border, and Dora Observatory, which looks across into the North.
- No private tour needed. Paju City runs a shuttle tour from Imjingak, about 3 hours. Buy your ticket at the DMZ ticket office at Imjingak, 09:00–14:30.
- Fare: 12,200 won with the monorail down into the tunnel, or 9,200 won if you walk down.
- Bring your physical passport. Copies, photos, and expired passports are refused, and tickets are sold only to people who are there in person.
- Closed on Mondays, weekday public holidays, and Seollal and Chuseok. Some seats can be booked online in advance (Korean site); the rest are sold on the day and often sell out, so arrive in the morning.
- The tour has no guide and the Paju site is in Korean only. If you want explanation in English, book a guided DMZ tour from Seoul instead (but not a JSA one).

- Shuttle bus: a daily round-trip shuttle leaves Hongik Univ. Station Exit 4 at 09:00, with pickups near Myeongdong and at Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station Exit 9. It leaves Nami at 16:30. Book with Ktourstory.
