Busan Travel Guide for First-Timers
Last checked: October 2026
Busan is Korea's second city: beaches, seafood markets, and hillside villages, spread along the coast. The sights fall into two halves: the east (Haeundae, Gwangalli, Gijang) and the west (Nampo, Jagalchi, Gamcheon, Yeongdo). Spend one day on each side and you'll have seen most of the highlights.
Getting here: see Seoul to Busan. Hungry? See what to eat in Busan.

Getting around Busan
- T-money works in Busan on the metro, buses, and taxis with a card reader. Bring the card you used in Seoul.
- Flying straight into Gimhae Airport? Buy a T-money card at a convenience store (GS25, CU, 7-Eleven) and top it up with cash. See the T-money guide.
- Metro: 1,600 won with a card for up to 10 km, 1,800 won beyond that. A single ticket costs 100 won more.
- City bus: 1,550 won with a card. You get the transfer discount between metro and bus only with a card, and only if you tap off.
- The Donghae Line (a Korail commuter line) runs along the east coast to Osiria and Gijang. T-money works on it too.
- Taxi: from 4,800 won for the first 2 km. Fares rise after 11 p.m.
Busan metro machines don't take foreign credit cards. Top up your card with cash, or buy QR tickets and 1-day or 3-day metro passes with a foreign card in the Busan Metro app or the BUSAN Pay app.
Haeundae Beach
Busan Line 2 Haeundae
- Korea's best-known city beach. Swimming season runs from late June through summer.
- Dongbaekseom, a small wooded island with a coastal walk, is at the west end of the beach (Dongbaek Station).
- The Bay 101 marina next to it has night views of the Marine City skyline.
- Haeundae Market, a 5-minute walk from the beach, is good for street food and grilled hagfish.
- Time needed: half a day. The Bay 101 is best at sunset.
Haeundae Blueline Park
Busan Line 2 Jungdong Exit7
An old coastal railway turned into two rides along the sea east of Haeundae. The start, Mipo Station, is about 15 minutes' walk from Jungdong Station.
- Sky Capsule: small pod cars on an elevated track between Mipo and Cheongsapo, about 30 minutes one way. Priced per capsule: 50,000 won for 2 people, 55,000 for 3, 60,000 for 4.
- Beach Train: runs Mipo – Cheongsapo – Songjeong, 4.8 km, about 25 minutes. 10,000 won one way, 14,000 won for two rides, 16,000 won for an all-day pass.
- Hours: from 09:00 (Sky Capsule from 08:30). The last rides are around 18:00–19:00 in winter and 20:30–21:30 in summer.
- A good plan: Sky Capsule one way from Mipo to Cheongsapo, then the Beach Train on to Songjeong.
Book the Sky Capsule online. Bookings open every Tuesday at 07:00 Korea time, for the week four weeks ahead, and weekend slots sell out. Only a few tickets are sold on site.

Busan icons
Four tastes Busan is known for across Korea. All of them are on the Busan food guide, with where to find them.
Busan's soul food. Hundreds of shops, many open 24 hours.
Born in the Korean War, when refugees had wheat flour but no buckwheat.
Korea's fish-cake capital. On skewers in hot broth at every market.

Events in 2026
| Event | When | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Gwangalli drone light show | Every Saturday | Gwangalli Beach |
| Gamcheon Alley Festival | Oct 31 – Nov 1, 10:00–18:00 | Gamcheon Culture Village |
| Busan Fireworks Festival | Saturday, Nov 7 | Gwangalli Beach |
| Busan International Film Festival | Early October each year (held Oct 6–15 in 2026) | Centum City, Nampo-dong |
The Fireworks Festival draws huge crowds. Paid seats in front of the beach cost 70,000–100,000 won; the rest of the beach is free but fills up hours early.
Honest take
- Sky Capsule or Beach Train? The capsule is charming but priced per pod (50,000 won for two). On a budget, the Beach Train covers the same coastline for 10,000 won.
- Taejongdae takes more effort right now. With the Danubi train suspended, it means a lot of walking. If you're short on time or energy, Huinnyeoul Culture Village on the same island is the other cliff-and-sea stop.
- Raw fish at Jagalchi: ask prices first. It's a great experience, but overcharging cases have made the news. Agree the price and table charge before you sit down.
- Haedong Yonggungsa on a weekday. On weekends the temple paths are shoulder to shoulder.
